Wire Wrapping: 3 Tips for a Successful Business

Imagine this: You’re turning your passion into profit by wire wrapping beautiful jewelry from anywhere. And each piece you make sells with ease.

I’ve lived this experience. I’ve been wire wrapping for eight years. During this time, I wrapped high-quality jewelry all over the world and sold over 500 pieces. All I needed was a pair of wire cutters, bent-nose pliers, wire, and some gemstones that traveled with me everywhere. I created many pieces while basking on Hawaiian beaches.

Many people have a studio, and depending on what you’re aiming to create, this can be incredibly beneficial. Having one safe space where you can consistently create is a huge blessing. If you’re incorporating techniques like silversmithing, oxidizing, or hammering, a desk or studio setup might be ideal to achieve the look you’re going for. Personally, I didn’t stay in one place long enough to build a studio, as I traveled full-time.

Whether you’re set up at your desk or wandering the globe, chances are you’re reading this because you want to sell your art and bring in some extra income doing something you love. I’m here to help!

I’ve sold over 500 wire-wrapped pieces, earning more than $50,000, just as a side hustle. While I took custom pieces seriously, for the most part, I created whatever felt good and sold it to people it resonated with.

I’ve mapped out the top three tips I wish I knew when starting out so you can accelerate your journey to making money from your art!

TIP #1: Brand Yourself!

Branding includes several aspects: a brand name (or using your own name), developing an online presence, and even having a recognizable style or signature weave for your pieces!

TIP #2: Pick 1–2 social media outlets to prioritize.

Don’t try to conquer them all. Consistently posting is the number one thing that will help you grow. It’s nearly impossible—even with this as your full-time job—to regularly post on more than two social media platforms.

If you want to repurpose your content, I highly recommend paying for Repurpose.io. You can focus primarily on Instagram, but your Reels can easily be reposted as YouTube Shorts and TikToks (assuming TikTok isn’t shut down).

TIP #3: Build a Wire Wrapping Community!

Take time to reply to comments and engage with your followers by commenting on their pages. If someone is interacting with your page a lot, make an effort to reciprocate. You never know who your next client might be!

For example, I once interacted with someone on Instagram who followed me, and shortly afterward, they spent $900 on two wraps. Treat everyone like a potential client.

Don’t be afraid to start a Facebook group! Whether you’re looking for like-minded people or some inspiration, Facebook groups can be great for connecting with amazing artists.

As I got better, some of my followers and group members began to ask me how I made my pieces. I hadn’t considered other artists wanting to learn from me—I had primarily focused on selling my wraps. But once I decided to prioritize teaching alongside selling, that’s when I started making passive income.

So I filmed my start-to-finish process for a couple of wraps and began putting myself out there more as a teacher. Quickly, I became the #1 wire jewelry teacher on one of the largest art teaching platforms in the world. I have over 1,800 students and 70,000 minutes of my tutorials watched.

Now, I want to create similar opportunities for other wire artists by giving them a place to share their work with people specifically interested in learning how to wire wrap.
